Cleaning Your Window Blinds

Here are the most important points:

Should the blinds be removed to clean them or not? Items needed for cleaning: Microfibre cloth, blind dusting tool, washing-up liquid, a cloth and a hoover.

If you have installed window blinds in Essex, you may soon discover how quickly they can become dirty.

In certain areas of your home, especially the kitchen, where grease can easily attract dirt to the surface of the blinds can you may find it difficult to remove this unwanted material.

Depending upon the size of the slats used with the blind, it will either be very easy to clean or may become time-consuming. It also depends on how many blinds are in your home and the amount of particulate material that comes into your home regularly.

Here is an overview of the easiest ways to clean window blinds of any size or design.

Removing Your Blinds To Clean Them

One of the easiest ways to clean your window blinds is to remove them from the window. You will want to place just the slats into your bath and use warm water with dish soap. You may also want to add baking soda which can assist in removing stains that can accumulate over time.

You will then want to rinse it off thoroughly, allow it to dry, and then put the blinds back in place. Avoid submerging the top portion of the window blinds where the mechanism for opening, closing, and adjusting the blinds is located. You should also avoid saturating the string that is used to open and close the blinds.

Cleaning Window Blinds Without Removing Them

If you would prefer not to remove the window blinds, you can also clean them thoroughly from a standing position. You will want to begin with a microfibre cloth and a duster to remove most of the accumulated dust. You may also want to consider getting a glove similar to a duster so you can clean the slats much more quickly.

Using a hoover is also highly recommended. The combination of the microfibre cloth, duster, and hoover will help you remove most of the dust that has accumulated.

Once this is done, you will want to use a wet cloth with a small amount of washing-up liquid. The cloth should not be currently saturating. It needs to be damp enough to pick up the remaining dust particulates without saturating the strings in between the slats. By adjusting the slats' angle, you can do both sides very easily.

It is highly recommended that you use a microfibre cloth and a microfibre mini blind duster to get as much dust as possible.

Cleaning Vertical Blinds

The process of cleaning vertical blinds can be more time-consuming. These are extremely long slats, usually measured more than 6 feet each. These are installed in front of sliding glass windows.

You will want to use a hoover initially. Any remaining dust, or grime stuck to these elongated slats, can be removed using a damp cloth with, yet again, a small amount of washing-up liquid or detergent.

How Often Should You Clean Your Blinds?

The intervals between cleaning your blinds should be no more than three months. If you wait longer than that, any materials that could ultimately stain your blinds could become permanent.

If you are cleaning blinds in the kitchen area, this should be done at least once every two weeks. This is due to the grease often produced in kitchens that can accumulate rapidly on the exterior of the horizontal blind slats in this area of your home.

Cleaning your window blinds does not have to be a difficult task. You can complete this process quickly when done regularly and in shorter intervals.

If you have multiple blinds throughout your home, it may take several hours to thoroughly clean them. Some blinds are easier to clean than others. A wooden or plastic blind will be different from cleaning a Roman blind. That's why setting a schedule for cleaning the blinds in each room, preferably doing this work once a week, will limit your time cleaning your blinds to just a few minutes.

Cleaning your shutters or blinds may not be the most luxurious task, but it can certainly improve the interior appearance of your home and office. It will also expand the longevity and usefulness of your blinds as long as you own your home.
